Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician, is said to be the originator of much of what we call numerology today. He believed that everything had a numerical relationship and it was up to the mind to seek the secrets of these relationships or have them revealed by divine grace.

They play an important role in Judaic ritual practices and are believed to be a means for understanding the divine. It is the same in Christianity and are key in deciphering the esoteric meanings of the bible itself.
